{"id":3312,"date":"2019-05-10T14:46:11","date_gmt":"2019-05-10T12:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.gocept.com\/?p=3312"},"modified":"2019-05-11T09:35:28","modified_gmt":"2019-05-11T07:35:28","slug":"celebration-zope-4-final-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.gocept.com\/2019\/05\/10\/celebration-zope-4-final-release\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebration: Zope 4 final release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>TL;DR:<\/strong> Zope 4 beta phase ended, final version released!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After hard, long years of preparation Earl Zope now finally made it to get a permanent license for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Python 3 wonderland (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.gocept.com\/2016\/09\/05\/zope-in-the-python-3-wonderland\/\" target=\"_blank\">Python 3 wonderland<\/a>: In September 2016 almost 20 people started with the reanimation of Zope at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Zope Resurrection sprint (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.gocept.com\/2016\/09\/29\/zope-resurrection-part-1-reanimation\/\" target=\"_blank\">Zope Resurrection sprint<\/a>. This marked the beginning of a wonderful journey for Earl Zope himself for the people who helped him. In August 2017 Earl Zope became aware that his Python 2 country will irreversibly be <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"destroyed by 2020 (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.gocept.com\/2017\/08\/22\/zope-preparing-to-enter-python-3-wonderland\/\" target=\"_blank\">destroyed by 2020<\/a>. Earl Zope was successfully applying for for <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a beta permission (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.gocept.com\/2017\/09\/22\/earl-zope-ii-is-dead-long-live-earl-zope\/\" target=\"_blank\">a beta permission<\/a> for the Python 3 wonderland in September 2017. This beta permission has been extended 9 times to give Earl Zope time to become a good citizen in his new home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earl Zope says a big thank you to all who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>contributed to the Python 3 migration even before the resurrection sprint<\/li><li>wrote bug reports<\/li><li>fixed bugs<\/li><li>contributed time and\/or money for the migration process<\/li><li>encouraged the developers<\/li><li>tested beta versions or even used them in production<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>To be welcome in the Python 3 wonderland many nuts had to be cracked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>porting of the code of Zope and its dependencies to Python 3<\/li><li>rewrite of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"RestrictedPython (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/pypi.org\/project\/RestrictedPython\/\" target=\"_blank\">RestrictedPython<\/a> from scratch<\/li><li>develop a migration strategy for the ZODB contents aka <code>Data.fs<\/code><\/li><li>polish the user interface of the Zope management interface (ZMI)<\/li><li>and many more\u2026<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Earl Zope is looking forward to a happy future in the Python 3 wonderland. Currently he did not yet give up his settling in the Python 2 land. This is planned to happen shortly before or after the Python 2 sunset in the beginning of 2020 when the son of Earl Zope\u00a0IV becomes the new Earl Zope\u00a0V.
